Food waste increases the environmental impacts of foods if their entire life cycle is considered. Effective and practicable measures can protect the environment.
Avoiding and reducing food waste produces simultaneous benefits for climate protection and biodiversity. However, food waste also has implications for nutrient losses and socioeconomic aspects. These and further issues are investigated in the EU-funded WASTEWISE Project, which runs from November 2024 to April 2028. Agroscope is collecting detailed data on food waste and will be calculating the environmental impacts of food waste and losses throughout Europe. The inclusion of nutrient losses and dietary aspects enables a more-complete determination of the environmental impacts.
