In den 1990er-Jahren hat das Zentrum für Bienenforschung an einem Screeningprogramm teilgenommen, bei dem mehr als 100 ätherische Öle und Komponente von ätherischen Oelen auf eine mögliche Wirksamkeit gegen Varroa getestet worden sind. Zwar erwiesen sich die Öle des Salbeis, des Ysops und des Thymians als interessant, nur Thymol wurde aber in akariziden Produkten eingesetzt. Die Behandlungen mit Thymol erfordern einen geringen Aufwand und es werden auf dem Markt verschiedene Präparate angeboten. Obwohl Thymol zu Rückständen im Wachs und im Honig führt, sind diese aus toxikologischer Sicht unbedenklich.

Seit ca. 2008 ging die Anwendung von Produkten auf der Basis von Thymol in der Schweiz zurück und Imkerinnen und Imker, die mit diesen Produkten arbeiten, haben tendenziell grössere Verluste im Winter zu beklagen als solche, die beispielsweise Ameisensäure einsetzen.
