The aggregation of various environmental impacts into an overall ranking is a key concern for policy-makers with their need for quickly available, simple-to-grasp information or for the commercial sector, e.g. for quality labels and certifications. Different impacts with different measuring units must be standardised before aggregation, so that the individual values of the indicators are comparable.

Owing to the large and increasing number of quality labels and assessment schemes in the food sector it is also crucial to assess these according to a set of criteria and to analyse differences to common (partially) aggregated indicators in the life-cycle analysis, identify pros and cons, and communicate the conclusions via suitable channels.
