Mountain timber lines are significant markers of transition between Swiss landscapes types. They play an important role in the environmental assessment of land-use change, land abandonment, and climate research.
Swiss tree lines and forest lines were modelled using a GIS, based on high-resolution topographic data. A detailed description of the methods used was published under the title ’Swiss tree lines – a GIS-based approximation‘ (5MB) and is available as a download at Landscape Online.
