Soya is a key source of protein worldwide. In the West it is used mainly as animal feed or as a high quality oil. Soya accounts for two thirds of the protein-containing flour consumed worldwide and over 80% of global production is genetically modified. Domestic production meets less than 1% of Switzerland’s demand for soya meal, estimated at 300,000 tonnes annually. Humans consume soya in a wide variety of forms, the best known of which in Europe are “soya milk” and tofu. With its breeding programme for non-GMO soya, Agroscope has been contributing to the success of this crop on the European continent for over 30 years.
