Project Title:
Sustainable and Efficient Production of High-Quality Beef
Strategic Research Field:
Optimising and coordinating multifunctional grassland use and livestock husbandry
As part of the updating of feeding standards for fattening cattle, two new topics have been included. The first is feed autonomy – specifically, the formulation of rations with protein sources other than soya that can be grown in Switzerland. These rations either contain feedstuffs such as peas, rapeseed meal or lupin, or nitrogen-rich forage such as alfalfa or legume-rich mixtures. The second topic concerns the efficiency of the animals used for fattening as a function of their genetic origin (crosses of different beef breeds with dairy cows) and the rations utilised – rations that were established in line with the forage produced in the different meat-production regions in Switzerland.
