Around 90 kg of food is wasted in Swiss households per person and year. Part of the waste could be avoided, which would be a win for both the pocketbook and the environment. Agroscope has produced a guide for reducing food waste.
As part of Project ‘Save It, Don’t Chuck It’, Swiss volunteers documented which foods were disposed of in their household within seven days. Halfway through the experiment one group of participants received an individual handout with concrete tips for reducing food waste based on the results of the first measurement. The aim was to give practical impetus to and encourage individual behavioural changes.
Concrete tips formulated from the project findings
The results of both surveys were discussed together with the study participants at a workshop held in June 2025 at the Swiss Agricultural Museum, Burgrain. Attendees also helped to draft the guide, which has now been published. The aim was to develop practical approaches for a more conscious handling of foods in daily life, through dialogue between the general population and scientists. The guide can be downloaded free of charge.
