Preserving Biodiversity and Breeding Horses Sustainably

Breeding Equids in Switzerland

The Franches-Montagnes is the only remaining native breed of horse in Switzerland. With its work, Agroscope makes a crucial contribution to the long-term safeguarding of both the genetic diversity and population of breeding animals. By means of the above-mentioned research projects, we identify the genetic causes of economically important traits in horse breeding (behaviour, morphology and coat colour), and develop new methods for optimised mating planning using genome-based information. In order to strengthen the market relevance and acceptance of the Franches-Montagnes in Switzerland, we support the stakeholders of the sector with targeted market and marketing projects and campaigns.
