Breeding, Housing and Use of Equids

Horse Breeding, Housing and Use of Equids

The Franches-Montagnes (FM) - the only remaining breed of horse originating in Switzerland - is the focal point of the activities of the Agroscope Swiss National Stud Farm. The population of breeding stallions ensures the decentralised distribution of genetics throughout the whole of Switzerland. Through its research in the field of population management, the Swiss National Stud makes a crucial contribution to the long-term preservation of the Franches-Montagnes horse. A further objective is to steadily increase the marketability of the horses, thereby improving the profitability of breeding work. Other core issues revolve around safety and animal welfare in the keeping and use of horses.
