Use of Equids in Switzerland

The use of horses is often criticised as causing considerable animal suffering. Usually, it is the rider’s/driver’s lack of understanding of equine behaviour which leads to such situations, and complicates the handling of these (much heavier and stronger) flight animals. With its research on horse behaviour, Agroscope contributes to the promotion of the well-being of equids in use, and to safe and efficient horse training. To these ends, we investigate learning behaviour, personality types, forms of communication, and display. A well-established knowledge-transfer channel, Agroscope’s Swiss National Stud Farm conveys its findings directly to practitioners and trainers.
