Monitoraggio di routine dei parametri del suolo per l'Osservatorio nazionale dei suoli (NABO)

Switzerland is legally mandated to conduct a nationwide soil monitoring under the Ordinance on Soil Pollution (VBBo). The National Soil Monitoring (NABO) assesses soil quality over time, enabling early detection of undesirable trends and supporting the evaluation of sustainability measures. In 2025, NABO expanded its focus by introducing seven thematic modules covering various soil parameters. This project aims to measure key soil parameters for four modules: humus, pollutants (heavy metals, pesticides), nutrients and acidification, and microbial diversity. In addition, it will collect management information and site-specific metadata and provide open-access data for research and policy applications. With this, it supports the establishment of reference and comparative values and further extension and law enforcement tools. By taking a systems-oriented approach to routine soil monitoring, the project facilitates exploring interactions between soil properties, management, and the environment. The findings will support the development of site-specific soil conservation measures to ensure long-term soil quality in Switzerland.
