MALI: Management of Lixus juncii in sugar beet
Lixus juncii is an invasive insect in Switzerland that indirectly damages sugar beet and other crops by facilitating fungal infections (Rhizopus spp.), causing yield losses of up to 50%. The MALI project addresses key challenges:
- uncovering the insect’s largely unknown biology (WP1 & WP2),
- identifying the fungal species complex responsible for root rot,
- evaluating the diversity and impact of native parasitoids on L. juncii (WP3 & WP4),
- developing sustainable management strategies for stakeholders (WP4).
MALI aims to deepen ecological understanding of this pest and promote environmentally friendly control methods such as trap crops and pheromone lures. Ultimately, the project supports improved sugar beet production and reduces Switzerland’s dependence on sugar imports.
