Reducing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Emissions from Agriculture in order to Protect Surface Waters

18.14.19.02.01

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) losses from agriculture continue to have an adverse effect on Switzerland’s surface waters and groundwater. In this project, we develop scientific bases for exploring the main loss routes (run-off, erosion, drainage, leaching) in lysimeter and field trials, and test practical measures for reducing the input of substances into surface waters.

The research data and findings obtained are not only of use to agricultural extension and practitioners, but also form a basis for refining simulation models and life-cycle assessment tools. Further projects to do with policy-advisory and law-enforcement matters are of help to various authorities, mainly the FOAG and FOEN.
