Animal-Friendly Housing of Ruminants and Pigs

The Swiss population cares about the animal-friendly housing of livestock. As a contribution to the quality of livestock housing, the Swiss Animal Welfare Act contains a testing and authorisation process for mass-produced housing systems and equipment.

The testing of housing systems for ruminants and pigs falls under the remit of the Centre for Proper Housing of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office on Agroscope’s Tänikon site. The welfare of the animals in the systems promoted by the housing construction companies is assessed on the basis of behaviour and veterinary-medicine indicators. In addition, our research work contributes to the development of animal-friendly housing systems, as well as new animal-welfare assessment methods.
