Smart and Innovative – New Methods for Lower Herbicide Use in Vegetable Production

Gemuesebau Steketee

Alternative, innovative and smart weed-control methods aim to considerably reduce the use of herbicides in vegetable production. To this end, Agroscope tests the feasibility of various weed-control approaches, whilst identifying necessary adaptations of the cultivation systems and determining impacts both on the crops in question and on non-target organisms. Agroscope also develops optimum-sustainability weed-control strategies for vegetable crops of low competitive ability. Forgoing the use of herbicides in these crops is another medium-term aim. Agroscope also develops basic principles on the biology, recognition and control of problem weeds or neophytes in vegetable production. Through decisive action, the spread of problem plants can be prevented, thereby protecting vegetable cropping systems.
