Species Diversity in Soil Much Higher than Expected

The soil is one of the most species-rich habitats on Earth. This is the conclusion reached by a survey study conducted by a Swiss research team comprising Agroscope, WSL and the University of Zurich.

Researchers from WSL, Agroscope and the University of Zurich studied the available literature to assess the biodiversity of soils. According to their findings, around two-thirds of all species are part of the soil ecosystem – around twice as many as previously assumed. The paper was recently published in the prestigious journal PNAS.
