Medium- and long-term projected climate change poses numerous challenges and risks for the Swiss agriculture and food sector. Measures must be developed with the aim of strengthening the resilience of production systems and identifying opportunities in order to guarantee food security and protect the bases of production (soil, water).  Early awareness of the effects of climate change is necessary to enable (1) the timely development and implementation of efficient measures for crop, variety and site choice, (2) climate-adapted cultivation and irrigation methods, and (3) changes in farm management and land use. Moreover, it is imperative for the Swiss agricultural sector to contribute to the national and international climate protection targets by reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. The relevant measures must be implementable and regionally differentiated, and must not jeopardise the achievement of the other environmental targets through displacement effects.
