Protecting Natural Resources
Natural resources such as soil, water, air and biodiversity are the foundations of a healthy environment, but the intensive agriculture sometimes practised in Switzerland is damaging them. Measures taken to date are not sufficient, for example, to stem the loss of habitats for flora and fauna or adequately reduce nutrient losses. Agroscope analyses and measures above- and below-ground biodiversity, soil fertility and health, and the effects of agricultural production on surface waters and air. We evaluate policy measures and develop solutions for farming practice that aim to protect natural resources as the foundations of an agricultural sector with crop yield security.
These six priorities are described in the FOAG's Research Master Plan for the Agri-food Sector (pages 37–39).
