Ruminant husbandry is a pillar of Swiss agriculture: over two-thirds of Switzerland’s utilised agricultural area consists of grassland. Agroscope research supports the development of sustainable grassland systems. It also aims to identify measures for controlling greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant husbandry without penalising the competitiveness of farms.

Ammonia Reduction in Cattle Husbandry

In order to meet Agriculture-Related Environmental Objectives (AEO), total emissions of ammonia (NH3) in Switzerland must be reduced by around 40%. Both structural-procedural and organisational methods are necessary for reducing NH3 emissions from cattle-housing systems.

Producing Grass-Based Beef both Economically and Ecologically

Switzerland is a grassland country. On around 70% of the utilised agricultural area, arable farming is not possible. The grass from the meadows can be processed into dairy and meat products thanks to grazing animals.
