Decision-making tool for growing crops on wet arable land
Farmers interested in growing alternative crops on wet arable land can now find all the information they need in a decision-making table and fact sheet.
Wet arable land presents particular challenges to farmers due to high water tables, limited vehicular access and special soil conditions. However, alternatives to conventional, drainage-based cropping systems do exist. In fact, these sites offer great potential for supporting biodiversity, climate protection and sustainable raw material production. Against a background of climate change and increasing rewetting, there is a growing interest in site-adapted use and management systems.
Decision-making table and fact sheet
To this end, Agroscope has devised a decision-making table. It provides a structured overview of alternative options for using wet arable land in Switzerland.
In addition, the FiBL, WWF and Agroscope have jointly compiled a ‘paludiculture’ fact sheet for farmers. It provides preliminary guidance, highlights the challenges and opportunities of farming wet organic soils and illustrates different forms of use.
