Reducing Plant-Protect Products thanks to Precision Farming

Digital technologies make it possible to apply plant-protection products (PPPs) at the right time, in the right amount and in the right place. This means that the amount of PPPs used can be significantly reduced in some cases.

On just under 60 farms growing arable crops, vegetables, fruit and grapes, the resource project ‘Plant Protection Optimisation with Precision Farming’ (PFLOPF) conducted field tests to determine what contribution Precision Farming technologies could make to reducing PPP use. The results at the end of an eight-year project run time are positive: the aimed-for savings potential of at least 25% is achievable for many crops.

Technologies such as automatic guidance systems and section control are fully developed, easy to handle and affordable, and are therefore already widely used in practice. Newer methods such as spot-spraying for the targeted treatment of individual plants are being continuously refined and show great potential for signifcantly reducing the amounts of PPP used in the future.
