Engineering of New Bio-Based Molecules as Alternatives to Pesticides

Natural products (NPs) have been the starting point for the development of active biomolecules against pests and diseases. Bioactive NPs are obtained by bioassay-guided fractionation of an active extract from plants or microorganisms. Due to the challenges and technical difficulties associated with their production, industry moved away from NPs discovery and embraced new technologies, particularly combinatorial chemistry. However, new natural active compounds, with low impact on health and environment, are urgently needed. In this innovative project, fungi, plants and biogas digestate will be screened to identify bioactive NPs with new scaffolds. Bio-transformation and biotechnological approaches will be developed to generate new fungicides, nematicides, bactericides, and virucides.
