As part of the project ‘Optimising nitrogen management with digital processes (DigiN)’, site-specific processes are developed for the nitrogen fertilisation of the small-to-medium-sized fields typical of the Swiss agricultural sector.
The aim is to improve the nitrogen efficiency of the plants, and to reduce both leaching and denitrification. To achieve this aim, we collect data on spatial variability within the fields using multispectral drone and satellite images. These are supplemented with soil data and the nitrate content of semi-automatically drawn soil-water samples from reference areas. The combination of these data should enable the development of practical methods for agricultural practitioners.
