Nitrogen and potato cultivation

Potato

Effectiveness of the use of nitrogen supplied by potato cultivation.

This study showed that the variety ‘Laura’ has greater nitrogen fertiliser requirements and takes up the nitrogen more slowly than the variety ‘Bintje’ because its root system takes longer to become established. The form of the nitrogen supplied did not have a significant effect on tuber yield, or on the efficiency with which the potato utilised the nitrogen. The results of this study provide useful information for improving nitrogen fertilisation practices (dosage and application period) as a function of variety and the form of nitrogen supplied, and are incorporated in the "Principles of Agricultural Crop Fertilisation in Switzerland" PRIF 2017 guidelines
