Paradichlorobenzene was used for many years to control wax moths. However, analyses have shown that a considerable amount of honey was contaminated by this insecticide, and that the recycled wax also contained significant residues. The use of this product is therefore prohibited, and no longer has any place in good beekeeping practice. Beekeepers are being called on to completely forgo the use of paradichlorobenzene. The certification of Mellonex®, a product based on Bacillus thuringiensis toxin has expired, and it is no longer available on the market. Sulphur, formic acid and acetic acid are not permitted for the control of the wax moth as they are not approved as biocides.
