Soil Biology and Rhizosphere Microbiomes

Many microorganisms in the soil are able to exert a significant positive influence on plant growth, and hence on agricultural production. There are microorganisms that improve nutrient availability for the plant (e.g. mycorrhizal fungi), or which protect plants from disease.
The research we conduct aims to understand biological processes in the soil, and to identify useful bacteria and fungi of the rhizosphere microbiome. We also investigate whether field inoculation with beneficial microorganisms improves soil fertility and whether the added microbes can establish themselves in the soil. The aim is to allow a targeted field inoculation of beneficials that is suited to the site and its naturally occurring biome.
