Plant-protection products (PPP) are biologically active products which help to safeguard yield and quality in plant production. They may also have undesired side-effects for humans or the environment, however. Such risks are examined in depth before authorisation of a plant-protection product. The Ecotoxicology Research Group assesses the risks for living organisms in water, soil and on land for the attention of the licensing agency of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG). It also uses indicators to document long-term trends concerning the use of PPP’s and their risks. The Research Group develops solutions for an environmentally friendly use of plant-protection products. These solutions are important for the authorisation of these PPP’s, as well as for optimised agricultural practice.
