Due to the small-scale and diversified character of agricultural businesses in Switzerland, there are great differences in the degree and the form and type of implementation of mechanization. Both size and the branches of agriculture businesses as well as geo-graphical aspects play a key role in defining the degree of mechanization. The present study is part of a representative survey on the “Present state of mechanization and digi-talization in Swiss agriculture”. The survey aimed to obtain as detailed information as possible on used technologies, machines and work processes in agricultural businesses. In the present study we present selected results of three different branches of agricultural businesses of livestock husbandry (dairy and suckler cows and beef breeding) was sur-veyed and comparatively analysed. The results of the survey show that the degree of mechanization and automation in animal husbandry can show a wide bandwidth depend-ing on the investigated business branches and work procedures (e.g. feeding, milking, dung removal).
