Centre for proper housing

The Centre for proper housing of ruminants and pigs is a branch of the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) and forms part of the Law Enforcement Support Section. The Centre is jointly operated by the FVO and the ART.

Activities

Testing and authorising mass-produced housing systems and pen fittings for cattle, pigs, sheep and goats (in accordance with article 7 of the Swiss Act on Animal Protection).

Carrying out research projects on current animal welfare issues related to the housing of ruminants and pigs, as a basis for the assessment of housing systems within the scope of the testing and approval procedure and for the development of new animal-friendly housing systems.

Supporting cantonal authorities in the enforcement of the legislation on animal protection in the field of farm animal husbandry.

Elaborating control manuals regarding the housing of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats and advising the authorities in view of ensuring the enforcement of the stipulations of the Swiss Act on Animal Protection in the individual cantons.

Providing information and advice for individuals, schools, companies, organisations and authorities with respect to the animal-friendly housing of ruminants and pigs in compliance with the legal stipulations.

Maintaining regular contact with foreign authorities and research bodies in order to take international developments into due consideration.
