Diagnostic methods for rapid identification

Diagnostic tests are necessary for the rapid identification of the quarantine pathogen Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap). In order to find the origin of an outbreak (“source tracking”), suitable biomarkers are needed. This information is of high importance for plant protection services (e.g., Cantonal Phytosanitary Services) and producers.
Agroscope has established the complete genome sequence of Xap and has developed specific diagnostic tests (PCR, LAMP-PCR) and biodiversity markers (VNTR) based on the sequence data. Quick identification of Xap based on protein profiles (MALDI-TOF MS) is under development.

Control strategies based on genetic information

In the case of related Xanthomonas strains with different host range (e.g., X. arboricola pv. juglandis / Walnut), the presence/absence of single bacterial pathogenicity factors (genetic encoded factors that are harmful to a  particular plant species) could be analysed. The genome information helps to better understand the host-specificity and is important for the development of control strategies.
