In addition to a sustainable production of healthy food, the challenges of food security and self-sufficiency are of increased importance. The Institute for Plant Production Sciences IPS develops problem solutions, provides decision-support expertise, delivers legal tasks and takes care of the knowledge transfer to the Swiss agri-food industry.
Research at the Institute for Livestock Sciences ILS encompasses all activities whose aim is the sustainable and competitive production of milk, meat and bee products as the basis of healthy, safe,high-quality foodstuffs and supplements. The ILS also provides support for sustainable horse-breeding and -keeping, as well as researching animal welfare issues in ruminant and pig husbandry.
The Institute of Food Science IFS contributes with its research, knowledge exchange and selected services significantly to a safe, balanced and tasty diet for the consumers, respecting the principles of a sustainable development and based on fresh and processed Swiss products. The Institute has a unique collection of microorganisms with a high biodiversity with which cultures for fermented foods are produced.
The Institute for Sustainability Sciences ISS deals with the research and implementation of sustainability in the agri-food sector. Using a holistic systems approach, the ISS develops fundamental principles and decision-making aids for agriculture, government agencies and society in the spheres of ecology, economics and agricultural engineering. Within Agroscope, the ISS coordinates research in organic farming.
